10.5.4. Repair of a starter

Before dismantling of a starter be convinced of its malfunction by the following simple checks.
1. By means of the screw-driver check ease of movement of the coupling of the drive along a shaft.
2. Turn a drive gear wheel. The gear wheel has to be turned easily concerning a coupling nave in the direction of rotation of an anchor and should not be turned in an opposite direction.
3. Connect wires for "prikurivaniye" the minus plug of the rechargeable battery removed from the car to the starter case. Connect the second wire one end to the plus plug of the rechargeable battery, and another — to a conclusion of the operating wire of the traction relay. If the traction relay is serviceable, then the click will sound and the drive coupling will start. Otherwise the traction relay is subject to replacement.
4. Disconnect a wire from the operating conclusion of the traction relay and connect to the lower contact bolt of the traction relay. The anchor of a starter has to begin to rotate with a frequency more than 6000 min.-1. Otherwise repair a starter.
It will be required to you: a key "on 13", face heads of TORX E5, E7, the hammer, the screw-driver with a flat edge, sliding passatizh.
1. Turn off a nut of the lower contact bolt of the traction relay …
2. … also disconnect the tire from a bolt.
3. Turn out three bolts of fastening of the traction relay to a starter cover from the drive...
4. … also remove the traction relay.
5. Turn out two coupling bolts …
6. … also separate the stator and a cover from the drive.
7. Turn out two bolts of fastening of a cover from a collector...
8.... also uncover.
9. Take from the stator an anchor assembled with the brush holder.
10. Remove the brush holder from an anchor.
11. Take a starter drive lever support.
12. Remove a maslootrazhatelny cover of the planetary mechanism...
13. … and sealing ring.
14. Remove from axes drove three planetary gear wheels of a reducer.
15. Take a shaft of the drive and remove the lever.
16. Shift on an anchor shaft a restrictive ring, as shown in a photo.
17. Having hooked the screw-driver, remove a lock ring.
18. Remove a restrictive ring …
19. … and drive.
20. Remove a crown gear wheel of a planetary reducer.
21. Examine the brush holder. Check height of brushes in the brush holder. If height of 7 mm and less, replace the brush holder new. Check by means of an ohmmeter the isolated holders for short circuit with the case. Resistance has to strive for infinity.
22. On vents and pins of a shaft of an anchor there should not be damages (a zaboina and the tease). The collector of an anchor should not have obgoraniye traces. Eliminate an insignificant obgoraniye with the rags moistened in gasoline and a fine-grained emery cloth. Check an anchor winding for short circuit by means of an ohmmeter. Resistance has to strive for infinity.
23. Check whether the anchor of the traction relay of a starter easily moves, whether contact bolts a contact plate become isolated (by means of an ohmmeter).
24. Check the drive. Teeths of a gear wheel of the drive should not have considerable wear. The gear wheel has to be turned easily concerning a coupling nave in the direction of rotation of an anchor and should not be turned in an opposite direction. If teeths of a gear wheel are worn-out or damaged or the gear wheel is turned in both directions, replace the drive.
25. On the lever of the drive of a starter there should not be cracks and traces of considerable wear of grooves of forks.

Collect a starter in the sequence, the return dismantling, taking into account the following features.
1. Grease a shlitsevy surface of a shaft of an anchor with siliceous General Electric CG321 lubricant or similar.

PREVENTION
In use the coupling of the drive does not need to be greased. However it is necessary to clear it of dirt. Do not apply to cleaning of the drive of means which can wash up the lubricant put in its coupling.

2. Oil engine bearings (plugs) in starter covers.
3. For installation of a restrictive ring use sliding passatizha.
4. Before installation of the brush holder on an anchor part brushes and record in any available way (for example, rivets or small nails). After installation of the brush holder on an anchor release brushes, having removed the established clamps.
5. Before installation of the traction relay apply on the surface of the relay contacting to a starter cover from the drive, a thin layer of silicone sealant.
